      The Friends of Sausal Creek are seeking an Operations Manager to provide organizational support to the group. The Friends are a
      community-based group of residents, teachers, students, merchants, and
      elected officials working together to improve the Sausal Creek Watershed
      within the City of Oakland, with an ultimate vision of a healthy riparian
      corridor linking the hills and the Bay. Our organization's primary creek
      improvement activities, the weekend workdays and field events in the
      watershed and at the Native Plant Nursery, depend on volunteers to carry
      out a variety of field tasks, such as removal of non-native plant species,
      propagating and planting native plants, and monitoring.

      Position Description
      The Operations Manager provides organizational support to the Friends of
      Sausal Creek, based in Oakland. The Operations Manager acts as the liaison
      for the organization and its Board of Directors, providing information and
      services to the public, members of the group, city and county personnel
      who support the program, other community groups, and our funders. The Operations Manager also plays a leadership role
      within the organization, through fundraising, tracking and implementing
      all the group's activities, and managing the finances under the Board's

      General Characteristics and Required Skills
      The Friends, a nonprofit organization, seek an individual who can work
      with the Board of Directors and other active volunteers to raise funds and
      establish administrative systems for a recently incorporated nonprofit.
      The successful candidate will be able to: (1) plan, implement, and
      coordinate a variety of projects simultaneously; (2) work independently
      while at the same time accepting guidance from Board of Directors and volunteers; (3) delegate tasks and projects when appropriate; and (4)
      communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Experience
      facilitating groups is desirable. A working knowledge of word-processing,
      spreadsheet and database software is required; desktop publishing and webpage design experience is helpful. Experience
      writing grants and/or reporting to funders, and prior work in a nonprofit
      setting are strong plusses. Applicants should be prepared to work from home, have a valid driver's
      license, and access to a car.

      Direction Received
      The Operations Manager receives guidance and direction from the FOSC Board
      of Directors and will report to a designated member of the board.

      · Handle all paperwork for the group
      · Work with bookkeeper and treasurer to ensure that FOSC's financial records are in order and do billings
      · Field all phone calls--be point person for information regarding all group activities
      · Provide support and guidance to Board members and other volunteers on a
      variety of projects
      · Work on fund development
      · Do outreach for FOSC events, including update website listings, staff
      table at street fairs, write articles for local papers
      · Empty the P.O. Box and handle correspondence
      · Coordinate and maintain systems to track all FOSC activities and
      · Maintain database
      · Publish bi-monthly newsletter in coordination with our newsletter designer

      · Plan and lead monthly volunteer meetings
      · Attend monthly Board of Director meetings
      · Attend monthly Administrative Committee meetings and other meetings as
      · Assist with outreach to volunteers throughout the watershed, particularly
      in the Fruitvale area of the lower watershed
      · Attend a work event once a month

      This is a position without benefits, starting June 1, 2002. There is a
      six-month probationary period. The rate of pay is $15-20 per hour, DOE;
      the number of hours required would average 20 hours per week. More hours
      possible if funding permits.
