      AMBAG Planning Internships
      Summer & Fall 2011

      The Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments’ Planning Department has multiple internships available for the Summer and Fall of 2011 . The AMBAG planning intern(s) will assist with the development of one of California’s first Sustainable Communities Strategies pursuant to CA Senate Bill 375.

      AMBAG is both the federally designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Benito Counties and the cities within. and the Council of Governments (COG) for Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties. Under SB 375, the 18 MPOs in California must prepare a "Sustainable Communities Strategy" to reduce the amount of vehicle miles traveled (VMT) in their respective regions and demonstrate the ability for the region reduce per capita greenhouse gas emissions through coordinated land use and transportation planning.
      The first Sustainable Communities Strategy for the Monterey Bay Area will be drafted and integrated into the next Metropolitan Transportation Plan.
      AMBAG Planning Internships may range from 10 hours per week to up to 30 hours per week. Interns will be expected to work in AMBAG’s Marina office but may also telecommute for portion of the weekly commitment, based on AMBAG needs.

      Internships fall under three categories:

      1. Planning & Analyst Intern
      2. Planning & Analyst Intern â€" Spanish Translation
      3. Visualization/Urban Design Intern

      Internship #1: Planning & Analyst Intern

      Under close supervision, interns will be expected to provide support with data gathering, research, analysis and/or public workshops which may include any of the following projects:

      1. Development Potential Analysis for cities and counties within the AMBAG region
      2. Financial Feasibility Analysis of Infill
      3. Political Feasibility Analysis of Smart Growth Development Strategies
      4. Other Planning Department tasks such as assistance with other Sustainable Communities Strategy needs, the Regional Housing Needs Allocation Plan and update to the regional population forecast

      Required Qualifications

      • Course work in city or regional planning at the graduate or undergraduate level
      • Motivated, self-starter, good communicator, ability to follow direction


      Preferred Qualifications

      • Coursework or experience with financial feasibility analyses or coordinated land use and transportation planning
      • Strong understanding of best management practices for smart growth and economic development
      • Strong skills in MS Excel
      • Experience using GIS

      Compensation:

      This is an unpaid internship, but a great opportunity for interns to gain marketable experience and earn course credit while contributing to one of California’s first Sustainable Communities Strategies pursuant to SB 375.

      Internship #2: Planning & Analyst Intern â€" Spanish Translation

      Under close supervision, interns will be expected to provide support with the translation of planning materials into Spanish and may also assist with data gathering, research, analysis and/or public workshops which may include any of the following projects:

      1 Development Potential Analysis for cities and counties within the AMBAG region
      2 Financial Feasibility Analysis of Infill
      3 Political Feasibility Analysis of Smart Growth Development Strategies
      4 Other Planning Department tasks such as assistance with other Sustainable Communities Strategy needs, the Regional Housing Needs Allocation Plan and update to the regional population forecast

      Required Qualifications

      • Fluent in Spanish and English
      • Course work in city or regional planning at the graduate or undergraduate level
      • Motivated, self-starter, good communicator, ability to follow direction

      Preferred Qualifications

      • Spanish/English translation experience
      • Coursework or experience with financial feasibility analyses or coordinated land use and transportation planning
      • Strong understanding of best management practices for smart growth and economic development
      • Strong skills in MS Excel
      • Experience using GIS

      Internship #3: Visualization/Urban Design Intern

      Under close supervision, this intern will assist with renderings, street sections and 3D models as well as info-graphics and data visualization. Will assist with preparation of materials for presentations, meetings and documents. May also include assistance with other planning projects.

      Required Qualifications

      • Coursework in city or regional planning, landscape architecture, architecture or urban design at the undergraduate or graduate level
      • Familiarity with urban design concepts
      • Motivated, self-starter, good communicator, able to follow direction
      • Experience using Adobe Photoshop and/or Illustrator

      Preferred Qualifications

      • Demonstrated design skills (inclusive of landscape architecture, architecture, urban design or graphic design)
      • Experience with Adobe CS4 â€" Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign
      • Experience with Sketch Up and/or Rhino

      Compensation:

      This is an unpaid internship, but a great opportunity for interns to develop their portfolios, gain marketable experience and earn course credit while contributing to one of California’s first Sustainable Communities Strategies pursuant to SB 375.
