      GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS)
      ENVIRONMENTAL MODELING INTERN

      DEFINITION
      Receives general supervision from the Planning Division Manager or other Planning Division staff in the performance of duties related to developing and maintaining GIS data, including, but not limited to:
      Modeling:
      Modeling the effects of the rise of sea level rise, estimated based on climate change projections and flood storage capacity; Modeling the public health impacts of Capital Improvement Projects; Modeling airborne, soil and water contaminants.
      Program Support:
      Capital Projects' benefit cost ratio through correlation with new census and traffic data will be developed to assist in needs analysis for public improvements Healthy Communities Initiative, which encourage healthy and active lifestyles by identifying those projects, establishments or programs that improve public health Targeted General Plan, which seeks to gather input in the drafting of the scope of work to update to the General Plan, the city's vision, through, among other things, oral histories, which supplements the City's knowledge of past practices and activities.

      EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
      Operates GIS workstations and related peripherals such as plotters and GPS equipment; creates maps and performs spatial analysis using ArcView; performs data entry tasks related to specific GIS layers and databases including preparing source documents, digitizing, performing data conversion, entering data, and compiling metadata; assists as needed in other activities related to developing the citywide GIS and associated databases; and performs basic GIS tasks.

      MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
      Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skill would be:
      Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade supplemented by current enrollment in, or recent completion of, a degree or certificate program at an accredited college or university with major course work in geography, computer science, geographic information systems, or a closely related field or in the professional area for which the internship is considered.
      Experience: Experience with mapping and GIS applications are required.
      Knowledge of: Geography, GIS concepts, Windows operating systems. General city department functions, methods, and procedures; modern office procedures, methods and computers; currently deployed MS Office products; city operating systems; safe work practices.
      Ability to: Apply GIS technology to benefit the City; apply basic computer operating skills in a GIS environment; use GIS software such as ArcView to create maps and related products. Other applicable skills include use of software such as Microsoft Access or Excel. Learn and apply policies and procedures; take directions both orally and in writing; learn modern office practices and equipment; maintain accurate records and reports; operate various computer equipment; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing with users of all levels; work in a demanding environment on a continuous basis; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
      On a Continuous Basis: Observe and problem solve situations, policies and procedures associated with operations; know, interpret, and explain procedures to users; sit at a desk or in meetings for prolonged periods of time.

      Intermittently: Twist to reach equipment surrounding desk; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation; see and hear with sufficient acuity to successfully perform all aspects of the job; use telephone and write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means; may lift computers and related equipment; stand, walk, bend, stoop, twist, kneel and lift.

      License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license.

      Salary: $18 to $22 per hour
      Hours: Flexible 20 hours per week
