      Position: SPUR Transportation Policy Intern
      Hours per week: 20 hours per week minimum. Unpaid.
      Commitment: 3+ months
      Start Date: Winter 2010-11
      Reports to Sarah Karlinsky, Deputy Director

      ABOUT SPUR
      The San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association (SPUR) is one of North America’s preeminent urban planning and public policy organizations. Through research, advocacy and public education, SPUR promotes good planning and good government. SPUR is a member-supported nonprofit organization.

      GENERAL SUMMARY
      SPUR is seeking an intern to work closely with our Deputy Director on projects in the following areas:

      1. Research Assistance
      • Assist Deputy Director, Executive Director and Regional Policy Director with discreet research projects on an as-needed basis. Research transportation policy issues, including, but not limited to, topics related to public transit, bicycling, and transportation demand management.Past examples have included: research on the growth of the Metro system in Washington D.C. and research on the current state of the Geary BRT Planning Process.

      2. Project and Meeting Management
      • Assist with setting up meetings for various monthly transportation policy meetings. These include the Transportation Committee Meeting (1st Monday of every month), the Transportation Policy Board Meeting, and a monthly meeting with MTA Staff. Duties include sending out meeting notices, taking RSVPs, note taking and room set-up. Attendance at these meetings is required for this position.
      • Liaise with transportation advocates and guest speakers for transportation related events.
      • Provide logistical support for events as needed.

      3. Public Engagement
      • Help organize seasonal forums and monthly Transportation Committee meetings.
      • Contribute at least twice a week to SPUR's blog.
      • Generally, be a helping hand to the policy team and SPUR in general with events, meetings, filling in as Front Desk Ambassador when necessary, etc.

      QUALIFICATIONS
      • Master's degree in Public Policy or Urban Planning preferred.
      • Interest and familiarity with transportation policy, especially public transit issues in San Francisco.
      • Interest in policy advocacy on neighborhood, citywide, and regional levels.

      PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
      • Highly organized and capable of keeping track of details.
      • Ability to meet deadlines.
      • Comfort with working in groups, and interacting with a variety of different personality types and working styles.
      • Strong research and writing skills.
      • Experience with Microsoft Office, Apple computer systems, and social media platforms is preferred.
