      "High-Speed Rail: True Environmental Costs"

      Lecture | April 17 | 2-3 p.m. | Sutardja Dai Hall, Banatao Auditorium, UC

      Featured Speaker: Mikhail Chester, Post-Doctoral Researcher, UC Berkeley
      Institute of Transportation Studies

      Introduction to lecture: Samer Madanat, Xenel Professor of Engineering;
      Director, Institute of Transportation Studies

      Sponsor: Institute of Transportation Studies

      California recently received $2.4 billion in stimulus funds to build a new
      high-speed rail system. But is it really a greener option? Mikhail
      Chester, post-doctoral researcher at the UC Berkeley Institute of
      Transportation Studies (ITS Berkeley) and the co-author of a
      just-published landmark life-cycle study, evaluates the true environmental
      impact -- from construction to land-use change to implementation. ITS
      Berkeley Director Samer Madanat introduces the talk.
