      Student Intern – Planning and Development
      Duties and Responsibilities
      September 2009


      Santa Clara VTA is seeking one (1) student intern in VTA’s Congestion
      Management Agency. This position offers the opportunity to gain
      transportation and land use planning experience. The position also offers
      a student the opportunity to improve analytical and technical abilities,
      as well as verbal and written communication skills. The student intern
      will be participating in several planning initiatives, including VTA’s
      Community Design & Transportation Program, Development Review Program,
      Grand Boulevard Initiative, Bicycle Program, and other projects as
      necessary. The student intern may be called upon to assist in data
      collection, report reviews or other investigations related to other work
      groups within the Congestion Management Agency.

      Typical Tasks:

      • Gathers and analyzes statistical data;
      • Researches planning literature to support studies and projects;
      • Assists in the preparation of plans, maps, graphs, and
      presentation materials;
      • Assists with planning studies or field surveys as a team member;
      • Prepares technical reports under the supervision of professional
      planners;
      • Performs related duties as required.

      Qualifications: Interest in a career in Transportation or Planning and
      enrolled in a related undergraduate or graduate degree program. Knowledge
      of principles, theory and practices of Transportation Planning or Urban
      Planning required. Ideal candidate will possess effective oral and written
      communication skills, good computer skills (MS-Word, Excel and
      PowerPoint), sound problem-solving techniques, ability to reason
      logically, and ability to establish and maintain cooperative working
      relationships with others. Experience with GIS, graphics software, and/or
      web design is highly desirable.

      This is a paid internship at $15 per hour but does not include any other
      benefits. Work hours are flexible around school schedule, and the term of
      the internship is flexible, beginning immediately until the end of May
      2010. The successful applicant must have a valid California driver’s
      license.
