Reconnecting America provides the public, private and non-profit sectors
with a fact-based perspective on equitable transit-oriented development
(TOD), and seeks to reinvent the policy, planning and delivery system for
building healthier regions and communities. One of our core programs is
the Center for Transit-Oriented Development (CTOD), a partnership with the
Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) a national non-profit based out
of Chicago, and Strategic Economics an economics-consulting firm based in
Berkeley, California. CTOD provides best practices, research and tools to
support the implementation of equitable and sustainable transit-oriented
development across the country.
Reconnecting America headquarters are in Oakland, California with offices
in Washington D.C., Los Angeles and Denver, Colorado.
The Data Analyst/GIS Specialist Intern will work closely with Reconnecting
America and CTOD staff on a variety of project teams to provide GIS
mapping and analysis utilizing a variety of data. This intern position is
available starting June 1, 2009 with the possibility of applying for
full-time employment at a later date.
-Various GIS based data analysis using datasets including assessor?s data,
affordable housing data, census related data, employment data, and transit
route/station location information.
-Locating and creating station points for various TOD database related
-Analysis and data mining of CTOD database information, ridership
statistics, and land use information
-Mapping and graphic representation of related data analysis to numerous
project leads and partner organizations
-Providing technical information to local partners on topics including
housing, transit planning, urban design and economic development;
-Performing research and policy development work on federal, state and
local transportation, planning, land use and urban design policies that
support transit-oriented development and intercity transportation;
-Minimum of a bachelor?s degree in City Planning, Geography, Community
Development, Architecture or Public Policy, or other related field, or
equivalent work experience.
-Self-directed, resourceful and results-oriented;
-Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills. Ability to work
productively, professionally and respectfully with coworkers as well as a
wide range of partners, constituents and other critical community
stakeholders, in a diversity of settings;
-Excellent research and analytical skills;
-Excellent presentation and graphical skills;
-Ability to translate and display complex ideas into clear,
-Enthusiasm for and understanding of transit-oriented development
principles and strategies; familiarity and interest in transportation and
-Motivated, enthusiastic and committed to the organization?s mission.
-Computer proficiency, knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and the Adobe
Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop) a requirement.
-Proficiency in GIS mapping and related analysis functions. Python or
related programming language knowledge a plus
