      Student Intern - Transit Planning
      Duties and Responsibilities
      September 2008
      This student intern position in the Transit Planning Department of VTA?s
      Congestion Management Agency offers the opportunity to gain transit and
      transportation planning experience. The position offers a student the
      opportunity to improve not only analytical and technical abilities, but
      also verbal and written communication skills. Throughout the remaining of
      this year, the student intern will participate in several planning
      initiatives, including Community Based Transportation Plan, Bus Rapid
      Transit, Light Rail System Analysis, and Palo Alto Intermodal Transit
      Center Study. The student intern may be called upon to assist in data
      collection, report reviews or other investigations related to other work
      groups within the Congestion Management Agency. These other programs or
      efforts include: transportation demand modeling, pedestrian and bicycle
      program, transportation systems and operations, and highway/roadway
      planning.
      Typical Tasks:

      Gathers and analyzes statistical data;
      Researches planning literature to support studies and projects;
      Assists in the preparation of plans, maps, graphs, and presentation
      materials;
      Assists with planning studies or surveys as a team member;
      Prepares technical reports under the supervision of professional planners;
      Performs related duties as required.
      Qualifications: Interest in a career in Transportation or Planning and
      enrolled in a related undergraduate or graduate degree program. Knowledge
      of principles, theory and practices of Transportation Planning or Urban
      Planning required. Ideal candidate will possess effective oral and written
      communication skills, good computer skills, ability to reason logically,
      sound problem-solving techniques, and ability to establish and maintain
      cooperative working relationships with others.
      This is a paid internship at $15 per hour but does not include any other
      benefits. Work hours are flexible around school schedule. The successful
      applicant must have a valid California driver?s license.
