      Job Description: Three positions available

      The Position
      The Environmental Education Assistant assists in the operation of the
      irecycle@school Education Center field trips for 4th and 5th grade and
      high school classes at the located at the Davis Street Transfer
      Station. The position receives day-to-day direction from the Education
      Center coordinator or program manager and reports to work at the Davis
      Street Transfer Station in San Leandro CA, operated by Waste
      Management Inc. The program is overseen by a senior program manager
      located at the StopWaste.Org offices. View the program website here.

      Selected candidate(s) for the position must be able to provide own
      means of transportation.

      Example of Duties

      School Field Trip Instruction and Program Support

      Assist with confirming field trips including confirming buses,
      assembling teacher confirmation packets, copying handouts and
      acquiring brochures, and communication with teachers or schools.
      Assist with field trip set-up and clean-up including preparing
      Education Center, activity props, safety equipment, and pre-and
      post-field trip materials for teachers.
      Conduct field trips which includes: using principles and methods of
      environmental education instruction (provided in training), ensuring
      that teachers, chaperones and students know and follow safety rules;
      maintaining appropriate classroom decorum; using age-appropriate
      examples of reduce, reuse, recycle, and compost with students;
      assisting with hands-on activities; following a developed curriculum
      and script.
      Conduct information gathering and field trip curriculum updating as
      needed to ensure accuracy and quality of program.
      Participate as needed in debriefing Agency staff regarding Education
      Center program and administrative functions connected to the Education
      Center program.
      Assist with marketing of field trips which includes visiting schools,
      preparing mailings and communicating with teachers.
      Assist with ongoing maintenance of on-site worm bins, Biostack compost
      bin and Bay-Friendly garden as needed.
      Position starting in May: Duties will include assisting with summer
      field trip program, program development, evaluation and other tasks
      related to the irecycle@school program.
      Other irecycle@school School Programs Duties

      Assist with teacher training workshops providing support on set-up,
      material preparation, and hands-on activities.
      Assist with Wonders of a Worm Bin classroom presentations as needed.
      Assist with processing registration for Wonders of a Worm Bin
      classroom presentations.
      Assist with other tasks related to the irecycle@school program as needed.

      Assisting with entering evaluation data into database, and other
      information into appropriate logs or spreadsheets.
      Tracking and documenting work hours.
      Answering telephone as needed and taking messages.
      Assisting with other tasks related to the irecycle@school program as needed.
      Minimum Qualifications

      Knowledge of education and/or experience in teaching an environmental
      message to students (primarily elementary grades) in a non-formal
      education setting. Knowledge of the integrated waste management
      hierarchy and the concepts of reduce, reuse, recycle, and compost
      and/or other environmental scientific processes or issues.

      Ability to organize thoughts and effectively communicate both orally
      and in writing; be self-directed; manage personal time and be
      punctual; prioritize tasks; willingness to learn new skills;
      communicate and participate in a team setting; lift 50 pounds; work in
      an outdoor setting where there are loud sounds, dust, and various
      weather conditions.

      Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working
      relationships with colleagues, partners, and the public and provide
      quality customer service. Computer skills including word processing,
      spreadsheets, database entry, e-mail and Internet research.

      Any combination of experience and education that would demonstrate
      possession of the required knowledge and abilities for the position: a
      typical way to obtain this knowledge would be college course work in
      education, environmental education, environmental science or related
      field or experience providing environmental education or working with
      school age students.

      Desirable Qualifications
      Familiarity with communities in Alameda County, familiarity with
      current waste management issues and practices, ability to speak

      Hours and Rate of Pay

      Start Date: The irecycle@school Education Center has three positions
      available. One position will start May 27, 2008; the other two will
      start September 2, 2008.

      Hours: between 20-30 hours per week (up to 1,000 hours). May
      occasionally include Saturday, late afternoon, and evening hours;
      these would be scheduled in advance.

      Schedule: Position that starts May 27, 2008: schedule will be
      determined based on workload. Tentative ending date will be in
      December 2008 depending on the needs of the Agency and available hours
      for the position.

      Positions that start September 2, 2008: the schedule will be
      Monday 9:00 – 3:00
      Tuesday 9:00 – 3:00
      Wednesday 9:00 – 2:00
      Thursday 9:00 – 3:00
      Friday 9:00 – 3:00, plus additional scheduled events.
      Ending date for these two positions will be June 12, 2009.

      Pay: $20.00 per hour
