In the past year, the concern over climate change has entered the realm of urban planning. Communities are calling on their cities to take an active role in addressing greenhouse gas emissions and the environmental threats associated with climate change. In this first Speaker Series event of 2008, we will explore the relationship between planning and climate change, the role of planning in reducing impacts and the main areas planners can affect greenhouse gas emissions. We will conclude with a discussion on planning methods and policy options for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the potential impacts of climate change.

Brandi de Garmeaux is a recent graduate of the Urban & Regional Planning Master’s program at San Jose State University. Her Master’s thesis work focused on the role of urban planning in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the impacts of climate change. Brandi is currently investigating methods to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the built environment.
