      The Position
      The City of Cupertino is currently recruiting for Assistant Planner.
      The Assistant Planner will perform, under supervision, a variety of
      professional planning activities involving residential design review,
      use permits, subdivisions, and environmental review. This position is
      the entry-level class in the Planner series.
      Typical duties include the following: Assist in conducting analytical
      research investigations regarding environmental or other planning
      related issues. Analyze data on land use and other demographic data.
      Prepare reports on subjects such as residential design, use permits
      and subdivisions, including findings and recommendations for
      management review; prepare maps and other graphic representations;
      respond to public requests for planning information. Establish and
      maintain appropriate files, and prepare correspondence as required.
      Knowledge of: Principles, practices and trends of public planning;
      maps, site plans, and architectural drawings; laws, rules, and
      regulations pertaining to zoning and land use; research and
      investigative procedures; statistical and research methods as applied
      to the collection, analysis, and presentation of planning data;
      business correspondence, report writing, and English usage, spelling,
      punctuation and grammar; computer software, including word
      processing, spreadsheet, database and graphics applications.
      Ability to: Analyze and compile technical and statistical information
      related to planning issues; interpret and explain planning and zoning
      programs, ordinances, statutes and City policies and procedures to
      the general public; read and interpret architectural and engineering
      plans and specifications; on a continuous basis, sit at a desk or in
      meetings for long periods of time, twist and reach office equipment,
      stand, walk, climb or squat while conducting field checks; visually
      differentiate between colors on land use maps; lift or carry weight
      of 10 pounds or less; prepare reports on graphic presentations; learn
      applicable laws and regulations pertaining to environmental
      protection and land use development; attend evening and weekend
      meetings; communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in
      writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with
      those contacted in the course of work; analyze situations quickly and
      objectively and determine proper course of action.
      Experience and Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an
      accredited college or university with major coursework in urban
      planning, environmental studies, geography or related field. In
      addition to the Bachelor's degree: prior experience in a related
      field is preferred but not required. Experience with Photoshop and
      Arcview GIS is desirable. Membership in the American Institute of
      Certified Planners is a plus.
      License or Certificate: Possession, or ability to obtain, a valid
      California Driver's License.
      The Selection Procedure
      Applicants must complete an official City of Cupertino application
      and return to Human Resources immediately. The position will be open
      until filled. First review of applications will be August 31, 2007.
      The information provided on the application will be evaluated and
      screened as a part of the examination process. Based on the
      screening, those candidates with the most relevant qualifications
      will be invited to appear before a Qualifications Appraisal Board
      (QAB), which will determine those candidates that will be placed on
      an eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for 6
      months from the date established. The City of Cupertino is an equal

      Excellent supplemental Benefit package includes:
      2% @ 55 PERS Retirement fully paid by the City. Effective December
      22, 2007 the retirement formula will increase to 2.7% @ 55, with the
      City paying 6% of employee contribution.
