City of San Leandro Climate Protection Internship
The City of San Leandro takes pride in its reputation of being an energetic and well-managed city. The City is noted for its shoreline area, fine schools and affordable housing. It is ideally located for those who enjoy a wide range of cultural and recreational activities. The City is approximately fifteen square miles and has a population of 82,000.
The Climate Protection Intern position will provide an aspiring and industrious graduate student with an opportunity to work in local government. The position is located in the City Manager�s Office, reporting to the Assistant to the City Manager. The primary task of this position will be assisting City staff in developing a Climate Action Plan to reduce the City�s greenhouse gas emissions 25% by 2020. The plan will address both municipal operations and community-wide programs including land-use and transportation policies, energy efficiency, renewable energy and alternative fuels, solid waste management, green building, and public education. The City is developing a Climate Action Plan as part of the Alameda County Climate Protection project, with assistance from ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability.
Hours and Salary
The Intern will be expected to work 30-40 hours per week during the summer of 2007. The start and end dates and the daily schedule are negotiable. Occasional evening meetings may be required. There may be an option to continue employment in the Fall on a part-time basis up to a total of 999 hours for the position. The pay range is Office Assistant IV � V, $15.89 - $23.47 per hour, depending on qualifications.

The ideal candidate will possess advanced knowledge of or experience working with local governments on the topics of climate, energy and/or other sustainability initiatives. Applicants enrolled in or accepted to a Master�s degree program in a technical or policy related field preferred. Bachelor�s degree required. Work experience in energy/climate, transportation, waste, urban environmental issues or related fields preferred. Applicant must possess strong analytical skills, superior written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills including research abilities, and the ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
