Community Design + Architecture (http://www.community-design.com/) is a
growing 16-person, award-winning urban design and planning firm in Oakland,
California. Our work implements the concepts of smart growth and the new
urbanism, including: coordinating land use and transportation planning;
creating communities with a range of transportation, housing, shopping, and
employment choices; designing context-sensitive and multi-modal streets;
engaging stakeholders and decision-makers in a meaningful way; identifying a
clear path towards implementation; and recognizing that green sustainable
design can be achieved even in the most dense urban environments.
CD+A has an exciting range of work for public and private clients in the Bay
Area and across the country including: transportation corridor and
neighborhood planning projects in Charlottesville, VA and the San Joaquin
Valley; TOD projects in Palmdale and San Leandro, CA; rail station planning
and joint development in Marin and Sonoma Counties, mixed-use infill
projects in Menlo Park, Oakland, Vallejo; a streetscape master plan for San
Francisco; and green development guidelines for the Port of San Francisco.
CD+A is looking to fill the full-time position of Urban Designer requiring
at least one year of professional experience. Designers will work within
project teams, and have the opportunity to work at all stages of a variety
of projects including: the urban design of mixed-use neighborhoods and
districts, preparation of urban design and land use/transportation
guidelines and standards, the preparation of construction documents for
urban design and streetscape projects, and the preparation of proposals.

Candidates must have strong graphic (digital and freehand), research,
writing, and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work in a
multi-disciplinary environment. Candidates must have a Bachelor’s or Master’
s degree in architecture or planning, or a landscape architecture degree
with an urban design concentration. Depending upon educational background
candidates should have at least one to two years profession experience in
urban design, and be familiar with policy documents such as General Plans,
EIRs, zoning ordinances, etc. Candidates must be proficient in hand-drawing
and with computer programs including the MS Office and Adobe suite of
programs, and CAD (AutoCAD 2004). Experience with SketchUp, ArchView and
GIS programs is a plus.
