Please join the Institute of Urban and Regional Development and the
Global Metropolitan Studies Program in welcoming Thomas Maloutas, who
is spending the week on the UC Berkeley campus.

Maloutas is is a professor of Urban Social Geography at the
University of Thessaly in Greece, where he teaches in the Department
of Planning. He is also director of the Institute of Urban and Rural
Sociology at the National Centre for Social Research (EKKE) in Athens.

Maloutas has three lectures scheduled while in Berkeley. He will give
a Global Metropolitan Studies Program lecture on Monday, October 16
at 4 p.m. in 106 Wurster Hall. His topic is "Segregation, Social
Polarization and Inequality in Athens: The Trends of the 1990s." His
work focuses on social and ethnic segregation, housing and welfare
regimes, and changing social structures in Greek cities. His recent
research looks at the paradox of decreasing segregation in parallel
with increasing social polarization, inequality and booming immigration.

The Global Metro Studies talk will be followed by a reception at 5:30 p.m.

Maloutas will also speak at the Geography Tea Talk on Wednesday,
October 18, from 4-5:30 p.m., in 575 McCone Hall. He will discuss
immigration, economic competitiveness and social cohesion in Athens
at the turn of the century.

On Thursday, October 19, Maloutas will participate in a Visiting
Scholars Roundtable sponsored by the Institute of Urban and Regional
Development. This talk will start at noon on Thursday, October 19, in
the IURD conference room at 316 Wurster Hall. Maloutas will discuss
South European urbanization and social issues of urban growth in
      post-war Athens.

Please join us for one or all of these events. For further
information, contact Janet Dawson, IURD, jgdawson@..., phone
510-642-6579. For more information on Maloutas's research and
