      HOUSING PROGRAM ASSISTANT
      August 2006

      Job Summary: Under general direction of the Housing Director, the Housing
      Program Assistant will provide support to the Project Managers and the Asset
      Manager on a wide variety of tasks focused on the management, operational,
      and partnership activities of developments in progress and those owned and
      operated by the Housing Services Affiliate of the Bernal Heights
      Neighborhood Center and its affiliates. The Housing Program Assistant will
      have broad exposure to many aspects of development and management of
      affordable housing.

      The Organization: Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center (BHNC) is a member-led,
      community-based multi-service agency founded in 1978. Our mission is "to
      preserve and enhance the ethnic, cultural and economic diversity and
      well-being of the Bernal Heights community. We work to build a strong
      community for all, with a focus on the needs of low- and moderate-income
      people. We do this by providing services to support and increase
      opportunities for seniors, youth and others most at-risk; by preserving and
      expanding access to affordable housing; and by building the neighborhood's
      power and capacity to achieve these goals. We commit to being a provider of
      essential services, a builder of community, and a force for organizing
      neighborhood change." The Housing Program contributes toward these goals by
      working throughout San Francisco to provide and preserve stable and
      affordable homes for a broad diversity of populations. The BHNC has five key
      programs: Affordable Housing, Senior Services, Youth Services, Economic
      Development and Community Organizing.

      PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
      • in conjunction with Project Managers, become familiar with financing
      requirements and restrictions for each housing development project, assist
      with funding applications, perform pricing information for project budgets,
      and process monthly requests for payment and maintain records of budget
      expenditures and modifications, prepare financial documents for project
      close-out, and other tasks as assigned
      • in conjuction with the Asset Manager, gather data from in-house and
      outside sources, compile monitoring and compliance reports for funders and
      other parties, participate in meetings with property management and
      supportive services staff for building and resident status updates, and
      other tasks as assigned
      • file, copy, other general office duties as requested
      • participate in BHNC staff meetings and community-wide events including the
      annual membership drive, Fiesta on the Hill street fair, and BHNC’s annual
      Community Congress, among others

      KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED FOR THE JOB
      • strong verbal and written communication skills
      • strong organizational practices and careful attention to detail
      • ability to multi-task, adjust to changing priorities, and meet deadlines
      are essential
      • proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel; will train on accounting
      software
      • bachelor’s or graduate degree in planning, community development, urban
      studies, or other related field preferred

      Salary: Full-time non-exempt position, salary DOE. BHNC offers a competitive
