      Public Lands Conservation Specialist

      POSITION SUMMARY:

      The Public Lands Conservation Specialist is responsible for
      developing conservation strategies to effectively conserve
      biological diversity on public lands. The Public Lands
      Conservation Specialist works with other conservation and
      government relations staff and partners to analyze biological
      and conservation data, help assess field conditions, and
      identify protection and management strategies for conserving
      biological diversity on public lands managed by the Forest
      Service, Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service,
      and other federal and state agencies. Duties and
      responsibilities include the following:
      -Analyzes regional biological and conservation data
      -Works with other conservation and government relations staff to
      develop Conservation Action Plans and multi-site conservation
      strategies that define key attributes and identify common
      threats, critical stakeholders and best abatement strategies
      -Leads and participates in planning sessions
      -Analyzes public land management plans, programs, and policies
      -Develops responses to agency scoping documents, preliminary
      Environment Impact Statements, and other planning documents
      -Assists with other conservation action planning as necessary

      REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

      -Graduate degree in ecology, environmental planning,
      conservation biology, natural resource management, or related
      field and 1-3 years related experience or 3-5 years experience
      in conservation science and/or equivalent combination of
      education and experience; experience in fisheries, shrub steppe
      ecology, or forest ecology preferred.
      -Ability to manage complex or multiple projects, including
      staffing, workloads, and finances
      -Knowledge of species, natural communities, ecosystems,
      ecosystem processes, and their conservation needs; field
      experience in the Pacific Northwest preferred
      -Knowledge of federal land management programs, policies, and
      practices preferred
      -Ability to analyze and interpret scientific data and prepare
      reports of findings
      -Ability to synthesize, interpret, and communicate scientific
      information to influence conservation practice
      -Ability to manage time and diverse activities under deadlines
      while delivering quality results
      -Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g. Word,
      Excel, Web browsers) and ability to use provided computer
      technology to enhance the quality of work; ability to make
      queries and understand data in ArcView and Access databases.

      WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

      Travel throughout Oregon will be required up to 25% of scheduled
      hours.  May work in variable weather conditions, at remote
      locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under
      physically demanding circumstances.
