      Assistant Planner

      Under general supervision, this position performs a full range of technical work in current and long range planning, which includes planning research and analysis, development and environmental review, preparing studies and reports, and performing related work as required.  This is the entry-level classification in the professional planning series. 

      Examples of Duties

      Reviews and makes recommendations on use permit, variance, sign, design, subdivision, and other development projects; performs environmental analysis of development applications pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act; conducts field investigations; administers the City’s General Plan, Specific Plans, and zoning regulations; prepares reports, correspondence, exhibits and presentations in connection with the above and related functions; assists with special studies and in long range planning functions; responds to public/developer inquiry concerning interpretation of zoning ordinances, development standards, design guidelines, City  plans and policies regarding development, and provides general planning information services; attends meetings of the City Council, Planning Commission, Board of Adjustments, and Architectural and Site Review Committee as needed; may work as part of a team with other personnel on an intermittent or project basis; and performs other related duties as assigned.


      Knowledge of

      Principles, practices, and trends of public planning and architectural and urban design; land use laws; and General Plan, Specific Plan and zoning regulation administration.

      Skill in

      Reading and understanding architectural and construction plans; analyzing and making recommendations on development applications and preparing staff reports supporting those recommendations; operation of standard office equipment; computer word processing and spreadsheet programs; and establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with City Officials, employees and the public.

      A typical way of gaining the required knowledge is graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in City and Regional Planning or closely related field.  Six years of increasingly responsible experience in professional planning work may be substituted for the degree requirement.

      Two years of increasingly responsible experience in professional planning work is desirable.  A graduate degree in City and Regional Planning or closely related field may be substituted for one year of required experience.



      Salary range: $5,597 - $6,805/month. Salary includes 8% employee portion of PERS retirement contribution paid by the City.  Retirement plan is 2.7% @ 55 with single highest year and survivor benefits.  The City does not participate in Social Security.


      Choice of HMO/PPO plans through CalPERS Health Benefits – City pays up to $390/mo for health premiums and makes available an additional $500/mo for health premiums or additional taxable income
