Affordable Housing/Community Development Intern
California Coalition for Rural Housing
Self-motivated and interested in a career that entails using technical and qualitative skills in working for social change. Committed to community development work, affordable housing or to impacting low-income and very diverse communities. Must be very responsible, motivated and able to handle multiple tasks. Must welcome the opportunity to learn in a preprofessional learning experience. Basic math and writing competency skills are required, and spreadsheet experience is a bonus. Positive attitude. Students of color are strongly encouraged to apply.
Must be a full-time student for the entire duration of Internship program year. The Internship Program begins in June 2006 and ends in May 2007. Interns must commit to the following working schedule: full-time summer 2006, part-time the rest of the academic year until May 2007.

Affordable Housing Development: what it takes to develop affordable housing from start to finish, from the first idea of developing housing to financing the project and to construction completion
Real Estate Finance: financial proforma development, feasibility analysis; preparing financing applications for predevelopment, predevelopment, construction, and permanent sources of financing (working directly with financial lenders and investors)
Impacting Social Change: community development strategies for developing affordable housing within ethnically diverse low-income and emerging urban communities
Construction Design and Planning: building for low-income people without compromising the quality of construction - design, construction and the use of outdoor and indoor space
Political/Community Processes: city and community approval strategies for getting developments approved
Leadership: affordable housing/community development leadership skill building and mentorship for impacting social change at the county and local level
The Internship Program begins in June 2006 and ends in May 2007.
