      Greetings,

There is a resource that planning students at San Jose State should
      know about.

It's called The Forum at Redwood City, and it's a monthly series of
speakers (planners, architects, urban designers, etc.) from around
      the country.

It is currently in its third year. I have attended most of their
sessions, which have been both informative and sometimes provocative
in suggesting new ways to look at the world.

The sessions take place in downtown Redwood City at the Little Fox
Theater, located across from the historic County Courthouse (where
they have recently torn down an ugly Depression-era addition to
create a new civic plaza). Nearby, the City has demolished an entire
city block and a new entertainment, restaurant, and shopping complex
      is under construction.

So, in addition to the Forum presentations, students could get a
glimpse of the City's efforts to revitalize its downtown. It has a
wonderful inventory of older buildings and attractive landscaping,
street furniture, etc, -- but it has lacked an attraction to draw
      people downtown.

You can read more about the Forum at Redwood City at:

      http://www.redwoodcity.org/misc/morehottopics/forum.html

And you can read about their downtown revitalization efforts at:
