Job Title: Social Policy Specialist
Organization: Catholic Charities
Location: San Jose
Responsible for coordinating social policy education and advocacy activities
for the Agency.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Design, organize and implement a comprehensive social policy
advocacy program, including organizing special events for policy makers,
meetings, letter-writing and email campaigns
2. Advise agency leadership and program staff on key agency social
3. Support the advocacy involvement of the CEO, assisting with phone
correspondence with policy makers, messaging, speech and letter writing.
4. Serve as the agency’s initial point of contact for the policy makers
and their staff
SUMMARY OF OTHER JOB DUTIES:
1. Manage the activities of the agency’s Advocacy Network
A. Develop an annual social policy agenda for the agency.
B. Coordinate with advocacy representatives from each division
C. Make recommendations to CEO and Executive Team
2. Develop advocacy guidelines for program staff and volunteers.
A. Provide advocacy training for staff and volunteers as needed.
3. Coordinate advocacy efforts with the Communications and Parish
A. Regularly update public policy information on the website
B. Assist Parish Partnerships staff with advocacy information for parish
C. Communicate and coordinate efforts with other related Catholic
4. Develop resources to promote the advocacy mission of Catholic
Familiarity with human service nonprofits. Experience in public policy
ideal. Previous advocacy experience desireable. Equivalent education and
experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the job may be
B.A. or B.S. Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Sociology or other

Required knowledge, skills & abilities:
Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in cross-functional
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
Personal commitment to the expressed values and mission of Catholic
Ability to work at a desk for extended periods of time.
Ability to use a computer workstation.
Most work is done in a comfortable office environment.
Hours and other conditions:
Maximum 20 hrs a week as negotiated to a total of 800 hrs from January 3,
2006 – July 31, 2006. Basic office hours are Monday through Friday,
approximately 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
