      Job Description
Organization: The Next American City Inc.
      Title: Business Manager
      Position Type: Full-time

      Organizational Overview:

Described by The New York Times as a “subtle plan to change the world,” The
Next American City Inc. is a not-for-profit organization founded by a new
generation of urban thinkers and leaders to explore the transformation of
America’s cities and suburbs, examining how and why our built environment,
economy, society and culture are changing. Through a quarterly magazine,
events across the country, and op-eds in major newspapers, we promote
socially and environmentally sustainable economic growth in America’s cities
      and suburbs.

Further details about the organization can be found at www.americancity.org.

      Position Summary:

The Next American City Inc. is searching for an energetic, self-starting
leader to build a young not-for profit with an ideas-driven magazine at its
core into an organization with national impact.

The position will focus on day-to-day oversight of TNAC’s business
activities – including marketing, distribution, circulation, advertising,
and public relations. Major initiatives will include launching a direct mail
campaign to increase magazine circulation and expanding the organization’s
      ongoing development effort.

The Business Manager will be the first full-time staffperson for a
three-year old organization whose strong volunteer network has produced nine
magazine issues, hosted three major events, and generated national
publicity. The Business Manager will work closely with TNAC’s Publisher and
Editor-in-Chief, who will continue to coordinate the production of the
magazine and several other efforts. The ideal candidate would understand
magazine publishing, not-for-profit management, and fundraising, although
candidates who are only familiar with one or two of these fields should
apply as long as they can demonstrate the capacity to learn quickly.

      Responsibilities:

a.. Expand circulation by launching direct marketing effort, communicating
with existing subscribers, and building on already strong base for newsstand
      distribution
b.. Increase advertising sales, primarily through managing the work of
      outside advertising consultant
c.. Support and sustain ongoing fundraising efforts with foundations and
      individual donors
d.. Work with volunteers to organize fundraising or other events as
      necessary
e.. Manage volunteer business team to ensure:
a.. Ongoing development and updating of TNAC website
b.. Continued coverage of organization in other online and print media
f.. Work with Editor-in-Chief and Publisher to manage partnerships with
the University of Pennsylvania Institute for Urban Research and other
      organizations

We anticipate, particularly if the individual is based at the University of
Pennsylvania, to be able to supplement our existing volunteer base with an
extensive internship program to help carry out these duties. As the
organization grows, this job has the potential to evolve over time with
      significant opportunity for advancement.

      Qualifications:

       a.. A motivated, creative leader who is a self-starter
b.. A minimum of 3 years of experience either in the publishing field
(preferably with management experience) OR other substantive entrepreneurial
      business/not-for-profit experience
c.. Interest in and understanding of urban policy issues
d.. Proven record of team building, especially in regards to “virtual”
      teams
e.. Polished interpersonal and verbal/written communications skills, as
well as solid persuasion, negotiation and leadership skills

      Location:

Philadelphia, PA preferred, though we may consider applicants who are based
in other places along the Northeast Corridor. If based in Philadelphia, will
work from the University of Pennsylvania’s Institute for Urban Research,
with which The Next American City has recently established a partnership.

      Compensation Package:

Competitive salary, medical/dental insurance, holiday/vacation/sick leave
