      The City is seeking an experienced and energetic senior-level planner to perform a wide range of challenging advance and current planning within the Community Development Department. Reporting to the Planning Manager, the selected individual will manage complex and highly technical planning projects involving a tremendous amount of community participation and coordination with City staff. This position will be relied upon to provide technical expertise regarding the interpretation of California environmental law and resolving complex General Plan and zoning matters. The selected candidate will be responsible for supervising the preparation of revisions and updates to the Zoning Ordinance, and conducting other advance planning studies; coordinating the activities of Advisory Committees and providing direction to planning consultants; assisting with budget preparations; coordinating the processing of large and/or complex development proposals; coordinating the preparation and review of environmental review documents, including the supervision of contracted environmental consultants when required; preparing, in conjunction with other staff, grant applications.

      The successful candidate will demonstrate a combination of training, education and experience necessary to perform the duties of the position. The ideal candidate will have graduated from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, architecture, or a closely related field, supplemented with five or more years of responsible planning experience in either a city, county, regional, or private planning agency, with an emphasis on advance policy planning and responsible project management. A Master’s degree is desired and may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience.

      The selected candidate will have an extensive knowledge of the legal issues and technical codes related to zoning and city planning. Exceptional communication and facilitation skills and a commitment to a team approach for solving problems are essential for this position. The candidate shall also have responsible experience managing complex planning projects and studies with minimal supervision. Further, the ideal candidate will have a commitment to developing cooperative relationships with other city departments, community groups and local business associations.

      Additionally, the selected candidate will have excellent written and oral presentation skills, and exceptional personal computer skills. Excellent customer service skills are also essential. The selected candidate will possess a valid Class “C” California driver’s license by the date of hire.

      The salary range for this position is $6,339 - $7,705 per month. Appointment to the position may be made at any step within the range dependent upon the selected candidate’s training, education and prior related work experience.
      Benefits include: The City pays the employees 8% contribution for CalPERS (2.5% @ 55 Plan); vacation is based on the length of service; 12 days the first five years of employment, increasing to a maximum of 25 days per year, sick leave accrues at a rate of 12 days per year; a cafeteria benefits plan providing a choice of various medical plans under the CalPERS Medical, a MetLife Dental Plan with a buy-up option, and medical and dependent care flexible spending accounts; life and long-term disability insurance with an option to purchase increased coverage; the City participates in the Social Security and Medicare programs.
