      Job Title: Program Associate for Community Safety and Justice
      Organization: Urban Strategies Council
      Location: Oakland, CA

      Job Description:
      Urban Strategies Council seeks a full time Program Associate for Community
      Safety and Justice.  This position requires someone with a combination of
      training, skills and experience in data collection, data analysis, policy
      research, program materials development and meeting planning and support.
      The Program Associate will coordinate and supervisor the activities of one
      or more  research assistants or interns.  Specifically, the Program
      Associate will collect and analyze data and information on county, city and
      neighborhood level data on crime,
      incarceration, parole and probation.  This data will be collected from state
      and local agencies and community-based organizations. Additional skills or
      experience in GIS, administrative data sets, data presentation for lay
      audiences, community participatory research, and/or data-informed community
      planning, evaluation and decision-making are preferred.

      •                 Provide research assistance to support projects of Council staff and
      partner organizations
      •                 Manage the Council’s websites pages on community safety and justice,
      regularly posting new information and creating easy-to-use interfaces
      •                 Identify and analyze administrative data sets
      •                 Conduct research and data analysis in such areas as demographics, housing,
      health, education, employment and economic development related to formerly
      incarcerated persons and their families and neighborhoods
      •                 Interpret data and prepare narrative descriptions of analyses to inform
      strategic discussions
      •                 Respond to organizational and community requests for data, analyses, maps
      and other information
      •                 Participate in policy analysis on local, regional and national issues
      impacting low-income families and communities
      •                 Edit and publish an electronic newsletter
      •                 Work to plan, facilitate and staff various community convenings related to
      community safety and justice
      •                 Supervise activities of research assistants and interns
      •                 Perform other duties as required

      Education Requirements
      Master’s Degree in criminology, sociology, public policy, social work or
      similar field (three years experience may be substituted for the Masters

      Two year related work experience.

      Training, Experience and Proficiency in:
      •                 Creating and maintaining databases (Excel and Access required)
      •                 Data analysis, interpretation, report preparation and presentation
      •                 Research methods and quantitative analysis using statistical packages
      (STATA, SPSS, or SAS)
      •                 Oral and written communication
      •                 Facilitation, training and research support for people without backgrounds
      in research (preferably in support of community planning and action)
      •                 Working with people from diverse ethnic, linguistic, economic and
      professional backgrounds
      •                 Community participatory action research

      Additional qualifications preferred
      •                 GIS skills
      •                 Good organizational skills.  Must be self-starter and be able to work as
      part of a team
      •                 Bi-lingual a plus
