      Principal Planner - Planning - City of Sunnyvale Info Close Date: Apr 25, 2005 CITY OF SUNNYVALE PRINCIPAL PLANNER $88,655 - $107,761 Annually The Position: The City of Sunnyvale is currently recruiting for a Principal Planner in the Planning division in the the Community Development Department. This position supervises professional and clerical staff and performs complex professional planning functions, including handling current and policy planning projects, special studies, and general plan element preparation. This is supervisory level professional planning position. Incumbents serve as the leader of a planning section. This position requires a thorough knowledge of physical, social, and economic principles of urban planning and the ability to integrate diverse planning activities with the overall objectives of the community. Work is performed in accordance with policies established by the Planning Officer. Essential Functions: Conducts studies on specialized and complex planning issues and makes recommendations to Planning Commission and City Council. Directs, coordinates or personally prepares reports and studies on current and policy planning projects and issues and makes presentations to City Council, and various commissions and committees. Provides staff support and confers with applicants, consultants, citizens, City officials, and other city departments. Interprets City policies and procedures to staff and public. Recommends procedural changes for current, policy planning sections, and the public information counter. Prepares revisions to the elements of the General Plan. Drafts ordinances and prepares revisions to the Zoning code. Administers the California Environmental Quality Act. Reviews and comments on environmental impact reports. Assists in preparing Planning Division's goals, objectives, and annual budget. Provides for a smooth transition and implementation of new procedures,policies, and ordinances. Proposes personnel assignment changes to best meet the needs/demands in current or policy planning sections. Provides input to performance evaluations for senior, associate and assistant planners. May act for the Planning Officer in her/his absence at her/his direction. Other Functions: Supervises the daily activities of assigned subordinates. Assigns projects to planners according to skill level and work load demands. Assigns plan checks to project planners according to skill level and work load demands. Assures performance standards are met. Supervises the information counter schedule. Coordinates and participates in the computerization of planning records. Represents planning division in civic meetings and planning conferences. Coordinates and monitors consultant's work Assumes lead role at City Council and Planning Commission study session. Identifies need for training staff and City officials and develops/conducts training programs. Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to possession of a Master's degree in city planning, urban planning, architecture, or other closely-related subject from an accredited university and five years of progressively responsible professional experience in municipal planning activities with at least two years at the associate level or higher, preferably including some supervision of other professional planning staff.
