Senior Policy Director – Public Interest Position Open February 1, 2005
Nonprofit public health organization seeks full-time Senior Policy Director
for a new project in its Oakland office. The Senior Policy Director will
provide statewide leadership and technical assistance on pioneering work
to increase access to healthy foods and physical activity opportunities
through the use of local land use and redevelopment strategies. This is
anticipated to be a 1.5-year position with the possibility of additional
years depending on the availability of funding.
The Senior Policy Director will work with local health departments, community-based
organizations, city and county planning departments, and municipal attorneys
throughout California as part of a dynamic team of community organizers
and policy analysts who are developing local policies to improve public
health by increasing access to healthy foods and physical activity resources
at the local level. The main focus of the position will be to develop written
resources and a technical assistance training and consultation programs
on how traditional land use tools – general plans, zoning controls, conditional
use permits, and redevelopment plans – can be employed at the municipal
level to address the lack of healthy foods and access to physical activity,
especially in low-income communities. The work will focus primarily on
improving the health status of low-income food stamp recipients.
Duties include researching and writing resource materials for public health,
city planning, and city attorney audiences; drafting model local ordinances
and policies; answering questions from nutrition advocates and local governments
about existing and proposed land use laws; translating legal issues for
a non-legal audience; and working collaboratively with local health departments
and nonprofit organizations. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual
interested in developing cutting edge public health/ land use policies.
Requirements: JD or MCP required, membership with the State Bar of California
preferred. A strong preference will be given to candidates with 3-5 years
experience working on land use and/or redevelopment issues with community-based
organizations and/or local government agencies. Excellent research, public
speaking experience and written communication skills are essential. Travel
Starting salary: $5540 per month with excellent benefits. Applications
