      Children Now JOB ANNOUNCEMENT 12/04
      Senior Policy Associate/State KIDS COUNT Coordinator

      Children Now is seeking a full-time Senior Policy Associate in
      our Oakland office. This position will primarily serve as the
      California State KIDS COUNT coordinator, leading Children Now?s
      work on the annual California Report Card and biannual
      California County Data Book. This position reports to the Policy
      Director.
      Children Now is a research and action organization that works to
      put children first by improving their economic security, health,
      early care and after school opportunities. To learn more about

      Responsibilities
      1)                 Lead Children Now?s work on California Report Card,
      California County Data Book and other publications:
      o                 Research, write, analyze data and manage production &
      distribution of publications;
      o                 Coordinate the work of other policy and communications staff
      and outside consultants;
      o                 Develop collaborative relationships with local and state
      nonprofits to further policy goals;
      o                 Design and implement plans for advocacy using these annual
      publications;
      o                 With Director of Policy, manage project budget.
      2)                 Serve as State Coordinator for national KIDS COUNT network:
      o                 Attend annual and regional KIDS COUNT conferences and other
      meetings as appropriate, including presenting on Children Now
      research and activities;
      o                 Assist Annie E. Casey Foundation in releasing national KIDS
      COUNT publications;
      o                 Participate in development tasks, including writing grant
      proposals and grant reports and developing relationships with
      foundation staff.
      3)                 Participate in state legislative and administrative advocacy,
      with particular attention to the state budget:
      o                 Monitor and advocate on relevant state and federal legislation
      and administrative actions;
      o                 Research and write web-based action alerts for Children Now
      listserv members.
      o                 Work with communications staff to coordinate media and
      legislative outreach and events.
      4)                 Conduct other programmatic research, policy analysis and
      advocacy as needed.

      Qualifications
      ?                 Strong research and writing skills
      ?                 Experience analyzing and interpreting data and outstanding
      attention to detail
      ?                 Excellent communication and collaboration skills
      ?                 Commitment to children?s policy issues
      ?                 Bachelor?s degree

      Desired
      ?                 Knowledge of SPSS and/or SAS
      ?                 Familiarity with using Census data and public health data sets
      such as the California Health Interview Survey

      Compensation
      Salary range: $48,100-$58,100; generous benefits.
