The City of Berkeley Invites Applications for a
part-time (60% FTE) Associate Transportation Planner
The City of Berkeley is seeking a qualified person to serve as an
Planner in the Office of Transportation to carry out a range of work,
primarily related to transit and Transportation Demand Management programs
and planning. The position may also be assigned tasks related to
pedestrian, bicycle and other transportation-related activities, as
necessary and depending on the successful applicant's skills and
The position has been approved as a 60% time, benefited temporary (6 mo.)
position. However, it is quite possible that the position will be upgraded
to a permanent, benefited 60% position - this will be clarified within the
City's budget process in May 2004.
The successful candidate would be expected to work towards implementation
the City's Transit First policy, as well as the transportation goals of
City's General Plan. The position is expected to direct the Bus Shelter
program, liaise with area transit providers on service issues, track
planning projects affecting Berkeley, and manage transit-related contracts
(Eco Pass, West Berkeley shuttle).
Additional duties may include representing the City to regional
transportation agencies, developing grant applications, supporting
ridesharing and car-sharing programs. The Transportation Planning unit
works on bicycle, pedestrian, parking and long-range planning issues.

conducting interviews in late May/early June and making a selection in
The position requires the equivalent to graduation from a four-year
with major coursework in city, regional, or urban planning or a closely
related field and two (2) years of professional planning experience.
Progressively responsible related experience may be substituted for the
college coursework on a year-for-year basis. Must be able to attend
meetings as required. Experience working with local planning department
boards and commissions is desirable. NOTE: Employment background, academic
degrees, licenses, certificates, and other credentials are subject to
confirmation as part of the appointment process.

Benefits and Compensation
$57,840 - $68,652 annually. In addition, the City pays the employee's 8%
share to the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) and $2,170 to the
City's Supplemental Retirement Income Plan (SRIP) making the effective
salary $64,637 -$76,314 annually.
The City provides full coverage for employees and eligible dependents,
including domestic partners. Two weeks vacation annually. Three weeks
starting fourth year. Four weeks starting twelfth year. Sixteen paid
holidays annually. Employees earn twelve sick leave days annually.
Additional benefits include a city-paid discount on Y.M.C.A.membership, a
$20 monthly transit subsidy, and a Deferred Compensation Plan.
