      About the Department 

       

      The mission of the Environmental Services Department is to work with our community to conserve natural resources and safeguard the environment for future generations.

       

      The Sustainability and Compliance Division’s Land Use and Planning Group is primarily responsible for environmental review and permitting related to the San José-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility’s (“Facility”) capital improvement program (“CIP”) projects and land use.  The Plant Master Plan (“PMP”), adopted in November 2013, identified over 100 CIP projects planned for implementation through 2040.  Several of these projects have been initiated and several more will be over the next twelve months – many may require project-level CEQA support and permitting coverage.  In addition, the Group will continue to manage the burrowing owl habitat at the Facility and increase its promotion of the successes at the site. 

       

      Position and Duties 

      Working under the direction of Land Use and Planning staff, the intern will provide assistance such as:

       

      1. Compile data supporting project topics, memos, reports, standard operating procedures, etc.

      2. Work with Communications Division to manage the burrowing owl social media platforms (e.g. writing for the blog/website/twitter and posting photos to Flicker

      3. Assist with development of Burrowing Owl Habitat Management Plan.

      4. Review Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society survey reports and recording findings into database.

      5. Assist with monitoring of Santa Clara Valley Water District and tributary agency's agenda items.

      6. Manage capital improvement project SharePoint webpage/online resources (e.g. maintaining Master List containing CEQA and permitting details; building the Environmental Team webpage).

      7.Assist in the development of Environmental Team templates (e.g. Request for Information, mitigation monitoring and reporting program reporting and survey templates, research).

      8.Assist with other San Jose-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility environmental review, permitting and/or land use projects as requested (e.g. preparation, updates and/or printing of Plant Master Plan documents and maps).

      9.Assist with GIS and preparation of basic maps.

       

      Ideal Candidate

       

      1.  Ideal candidate is graduate student with prior experience in these areas, who plans to develop his/her career in the environmental field and is energetic, eager to learn and contribute to the Land Use and Planning Group’s projects.

       

      2. Work hours are flexible to accommodate for class attendance through scheduling.

       

      DEPARTMENT: Environmental Services (ESD) DIVISION: Sustainability and Compliance

       

      TERM OF ASSIGNMENT: Through June 30 of 2015; with option for extension

       

      HOURS PER WEEK: 20 - 30 hrs

       

      COMPENSATION: Student Intern $10.51 - 14.99 per hour

                                        Graduate Student Intern $13.58 - 20.06 per hour

       

      Salary ranges are dependent on qualifications and student status 

       

      Minimum Qualifications 

       

      MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS for Student Intern: Any combination equivalent to completion of high school and current enrollment in an accredited college or university in undergraduate or graduate program.

       

      MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS for Graduate Student Intern: Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of a Bachelor's Degree and current enrollment in a Masters degree program from an accredited college or university.

       

      Current enrollment in an accredited college or university in undergraduate or graduate program is required. Concentration in Environmental Studies, Land Use Planning, or Public Administration is preferred.
