Grant-funded, full-time, limited duration position for 3 months.Potential for position extension based on available grant funds. Under supervision, the Regional Earthquake and Hazards specialist performs a wide variety of professional and technical assignments. The principal program to which this position will be assigned focuses on natural hazards and the relationship with the built environment. Initiatives in that program include: (1) infrastructure and airport system assessment, housing vulnerability assessment, and transportation vulnerability assessment, (2) regional disaster resilience and long-term recovery planning focusing on economic, social and physical systems, and (3) outreach and education to the public about earthquakes and other hazards and their potential impact. The program does not deal directly with disaster response.
The successful candidate should possess a desire to work as part of a team and have the ability to take initiative and exercise good judgment.
DUTIES INCLUDE: (The examples may not cover all duties which may be performed)
- Gathering and tabulating data
- Setting up meetings, including arranging for rooms, speakers, and handouts
- Conducting basic research, writing reports and presenting information
- Reviewing policies and drafting policy options
- Representing ABAG at various meetings
- Maintaining communication with related agencies, stakeholders and the public
- Providing other staff support related to natural hazards and planning
- Knowledge of issues related to a variety of natural hazards and principles and practices of disaster recovery and mitigation planning
- Knowledge of GIS and database software such as Access
- Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and Wordpress is desirable
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Creative problem-solving; good organization and documentation skills
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with agency partners
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Geology, Engineering, Planning or a related field and a minimum of two (2) years of relevant professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job is qualifying. A Master’s degree is highly desirable.
In 2015, work location will move to Folsom Street and Beale Street in San Francisco.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Salary: $4,126 - $5,015 per month
Pension: Employee pays CalPERS 6.25% of salary toward 2.5% @ age 67 retirement plan
Social Security: Employee pays 6.2% of salary
Deferred Compensation: STARS/UTC 457 and/or ICMA-RC Retirement Plan (Voluntary)
Retiree Medical Account: $100 per month
Health and Dental Plans: Six HMO and three PPO Medical Plans, Dental Insurance, and VSP Vision. Out-of-pocket contribution may be required depending on selected coverage.
Life Insurance: ABAG Paid coverage equal to 2 times annual salary
Other Benefits: Public Transit Vouchers and pre-tax options for eligible health care and dependent care expenses
