ANNOUNCING AN A&WMA-GWS YOUNG PROFESSIONALS GROUP TOUR OF THE ZERO NET ENERGY BUILDING

      ON WEDNESDAY, NOV 6, 2013

The Golden West Section of the Air & Waste Management Association is pleased to invite you to tour the Zero Net Energy Building in San Leandro.  This event is sponsored by the Young Professionals Group (open to the young, as well as the young-at-heart)!  Please help us get the word out to individuals within your organization that may be interested in participating.

Zero Net Energy Center (ZNE) provides hands-on training to apprentice and journey-level electricians in Alameda County. The 46,000-sq-ft building targets getting a zero net energy certification in 2014 — some 17 years before the California Energy Commission’s 2030 Net Zero Energy Challenge standards. The ZNE should achieve a 29 percent energy use reduction compared to new commercial construction in California and a 75 percent energy use reduction compared to similar existing U.S. buildings as per the Commercial Buildings Energy Index.

The ZNE was retrofitted with sustainable building materials and uses leading technologies in wind, solar, solar thermal, lighting and building automation systems. After the original concrete building was gutted, most of the passive sustainability features were made on the roof. Here multiple monitors provide natural daylight and ventilation, natural heating/cooling and mounting support for the tilted rooftop PV panels. A total of 178 KWdc renewable energy technologies will generate an estimated 253,633 KWH annually through three 12 KWdc wind turbines; 154 KWdc of tilted and flat roof solar PV panels; and a 11 KWdc dual-axis solar tree, which tracks the sun for maximum exposure, self-adjusting both north/south and east/west.

After the tour we will walk to a nearby Round Table pizza for a no-host lunch.   We hope you can join us for the tour and lunch.  This is an opportunity to meet other young professionals in the area.
