      Professor Anne Whiston Spirn of MIT will present �Restoring Mill Creek:
      Landscape Literacy and Environmental Justice.� Spirn is visiting Stanford
      as the Model Scholar selected by the senior class in the Program on Urban

      Spirn, a professor of Landscape Architecture and Urban Studies and Planning
      at MIT, has an international reputation for scholarship that combines an
      understanding of the natural and built environments. She has received
      numerous fellowships and awards including the Guggenheim Fellowship and the
      President�s Award of Excellence from the American Society of Landscape
      Architects. In 2001, she received the International Cosmos Prize for
      �contributions to the harmonious coexistence of nature and mankind.�

      Spirn�s talk will focus on the research-in-action project that she directs
      in the inner-city neighborhood of West Philadelphia. Since 1987, the West
      Philadelphia Landscape Project (WPLP) has integrated research, teaching and
      community service to enhance environmental quality, stimulate economic
      development, and strengthen public school curricula and undergraduate and
      professional education. The project is also the subject of Spirn�s
      forthcoming book, *Top-Down/Bottom-Up: Rebuilding the Landscape of Community
