      Project Background

San Francisco’s Chinatown is the second and largest Chinatown in the
United States. It is a cultural Mecca for visitors and
people of Asian descent from around the world. Since the mid-1900s,
immigrants have been drawn to Chinatown for its
strong community ties and local-serving businesses. As the densest
neighborhood in the City, Chinatown suffers from a
share of congestion issues. Pedestrian, cars, and transit uses regularly
compete for right-of-way on narrow streets and
sidewalks. Furthermore, Chinatown’s residential population consists of
      primarily low-income, seniors, and monolingual
immigrants who are transit-dependent. A culturally sensitive approach is
      necessary to planning effective streets.

will develop a list of priority areas and recommendations for improving
