      HELP CAPTIVE ORCAS
      From: "Lucy Shelton" <ldshelton@...>
Subject: FW: URGENT ~ Immediate action needed to help captive orcas!

THIS IS MONUMENTAL!  Please take action on bill to ban performing orcas as indicated in the PAWS alert below, and forward.
AB 2140 will be heard Tuesday, April 8, at 9:00 AM in the Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee. It must pass in this committee in order to move forward.

Please excuse if this is a duplicate,-- I’ve seen many alerts on this, but note that this from PAWS includes a direct web “contact” to “click-on” for each of the committee assembly members.  PAWS also gives credit for the information to “Ric O'Barry's Dolphin Project, a campaign under the International Marine Mammal Project at the non-profit Earth Island Institute and the League of Humane Voters-California.”

Also, you can sign the petition below, even if you’re not from California:
Links for more Information are provided at the end of the petition.

      Thank you for your help!
      For the Animals,
      Lucy Shelton

      PAWS ALERT!

      CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS
Please Take Action On Bill To Ban Performing Orcas

PAWS supporters are always asking us what they can do to help captive orcas. THIS is what you can do to help, and it needs to happen quickly!

California Assemblyman Richard Bloom has proposed landmark legislation that wouldban the captivity of orcas (also known as killer whales) for entertainment. We need your help to get it passed!

The proposed law, AB 2140, would end performance-based entertainment for all orcas in California, captive breeding programs, the export and import of genetic material, and the import and export of orcas within the state. It would also retire all captive orcas to sea pens (if available).

The bill will be heard in the Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee on Tuesday, April 8.It must pass in this committee in order to move forward.

The proposal for the orca bill comes in the wake of the documentary, Blackfish, which exposes the suffering caused by keeping these highly intelligent and socially complex animals in grossly inadequate conditions - all for human amusement.

      What you can do

If your assembly member is on the Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee (see list below), it is critical that you make a call before Tuesday, April 8, to express support for the orca bill. Your message should be brief and to the point:

"I am a constituent of Assemblymember (insert name) and I would like to register my support for AB 2140, the orca bill. I urge the Assemblymember to vote in favor of this important legislation."

The Assemblymember's office will keep a tally of all calls. Reportedly, SeaWorld is circulating an alert asking people to oppose the bill - so each and every call in support of the bill counts!

If you need to identify your Assembly member in order to determine if s/he is on the committee, you can visit http://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/.

(Please note: You can also send a message on-line by using the "contact" links below, however, we strongly encourage you to make a phone call instead, as it will be far more effective and ensures that your support is immediately counted.)
