thanks everyone for your answers! i really appreciate the responses, and
the overwhelming response (to my question, asking whether it's normal for
the Vitamix to shut off so quickly) was that something's up with my blender,
it is not normal, and i should contact the company. also got some tips on
how to prevent the shutting off.
good to know. maybe i am doing something wrong, but i have a feeling the
remade or re-whatever blender i got is just defective, unfortunately.
i'm reposting john's response because he meant to send it to the whole list.
thanks again, it's good to feel such support for these types of questions!

Your vitamix should not just shut off if you have the normal Vitamix
5000 or 4500 model. It should run until you turn it off. If it does
turn off before you shut it off, there is a problem with it.
Vitamix does make a model with a built-in timer that will shut off
the blender after a specified peroid of time.
For Artemis and the champion juicer.
It is normal for the champion to get a little warm while juicing.
That is how the unit operates- by "chewing" and while doing this it
creates friction, which creates heat. That being said, if you have a
DULL BLADE, it will cause more friction and heat than cutting of the
produce. So that is something you might want to look into. There are
a few ways to mitigate the heat affect. Please see my website and the
article listed below:
