I had a bit of a thyroid problem two years ago. My thyroid was swollen on both sides of my trachea (silly me, I thought I was getting bigger neck muscles) and someone educated about it pointed it out to me, said I was developing a goiter and said I should keep an eye on it.
I read as much as I could about goiters and learned that kale is a goitrogen, meaning that it irritates the thyroid and interferes with thyroid hormone production causing it to swell, which it certainly did in my case, so I stopped eating kale for a little while, about three months actually, just to give my thyroid a break. I was distressed at the idea of never eating kale again. It just didn't make sense. How could something so good for me be bad?
So...after the swelling went down (YAY!) I added kale back into my diet but this time in more moderate amounts; I used to eat a bunch of dino kale every day in my green drink. Now I eat about two bunches a week, 1/2 bunch at a time, and I eat nearly a whole head of local organic lettuce every day in my salads (that didn't change during those three months) so I know I am getting plenty of green leafy vegetables.
And here's the thing: I haven't seen any signs of a goiter in over a year and a half. My thyroid just needed some time off from all that kale!
(Soy and sauerkraut are not a concern for me because I don't eat those anyway.)
I hope this helps someone.

I would recommend my wife, Dr. Aumatma. She's a vegan
doctor and also
thyroid specialist. You can contact her by making a
on her site fertilevitality.com

Does anyone know of or can
recommend a vegan doctor in San Francisco or the Bay Area?
A friend of mine has a thyroid problem and is told by her
mainstream doctor that she can't eat soy, kale, and
sauerkraut, among her favorite foods. Wants to see what a
vegan doctor would advise.
Thanks for your
recommendations or suggestions,
