      Applications Available for Guggenheim Fellowships

Deadline: October 1, 2004 (United States and Canada)

December 1, 2004 (Latin America and Caribbean)

The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation (

      http://www.gf.org/
) provides fellowships for advanced professionals in the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and non-performing creative arts. The annual program is designed "to further the development of scholars and artists by assisting them to engage in research in any field of knowledge and creation in any of the arts, under the freest possible conditions and irrespective of race, color, or creed."

Fellowships are awarded through two annual competitions:

one open to citizens and permanent residents of the United States and Canada, and the other open to citizens and permanent residents of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The fellowships are awarded to men and women who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts.

Fellowships are not available for students.

Appointments are ordinarily made for one year. The amounts of the grants will be adjusted to the needs of the fellows, taking into consideration their other resources and the purpose and scope of their plans.

For further program information and application procedures, see the foundation's Web site. Information is available on the site in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
