Rarely do I post, but inaccuracies abound in the post below.
The best overall history of the early years of the SCA can be found

Ooooh dear, "mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa!"
Grovelling apologies to the List!
Let that be a lesson to me to check my sources if it's a while [2 years] since I've read them, and not to attempt anything factual when I'm seriously short on sleep!
In small mitigation, - I could mention that the first thing I said, un-introduced, to the grey-haired lady sitting beside me, knitting, in the Pavilion while watching Spring Tourney at Brockenhurst, was something like "Isn't it marvellous how the SCA has grown to a worldwide organisation from such small beginnings. We do so envy you all, where I come from!"
She replied " Well, I didn't expect it to get so big either when we held the First Party in my backyard."
And I went hot-and-cold all over and gasped " you're Diana Listmaker!"
[How often does one get to meet a Living Legend? That's the first time it's happened to me! My Hosts hadn't told me she was attending the Tourney, and I'd never seen a picture of her, so until that moment, I'd no idea who I was sitting next-to! A most memorable meeting. My Companions from Jersey are most envious.]
Retires, covered in embarassed confusion. I'll never live this down!
Yours in Service,
