I'd suggest you skip the grommets entirely and go straight to making hand
sewn eyelets. They're faster to do, and stronger, than installing
eyelets,and then covering them with floss. Also, a hand sewn eyelet is
quite small and unobtrusive, while a floss ccovered grommet makes a big 'ol
satin stitched circle, not the same look at all.
