I find that anything larger than 1" apart tends to get gapitis...
as for lacing material, I second the motion for "sport" or "boot"
shoelaces - those black "fabric" ones are unobtrusive, stay tied, and are
very hard to break. Most ribbon slips or won't stay tied, and that leather
stuff breaks easily and at unexpected moments....(run for the hills, the dam
