I've used the running stitch, with each insertion of the needle being a backstitch, for a loose kirtle. None of the seams have given away and I've worn it for about 5 years. Ok, the hem undid itself when I stepped on it, but that was thin silk thread and a hem stitch and easily repaired. I only did full backstitches on the seams I knew would be under stress. YMMV.
