Preliminary ideas for a Society Seasonal Challenge

This is an idea, inspired by the Seasonal Challenge in Atlantia, for more variety in SCA wide competitions. Baron Jonathas, keeper of the SCA Scores Site, has kindly offered to set up space for it on the Scores Site and is doing so now.

This is a preliminary draft of the Challenge, all input is invited.

There have been many good competitions mentioned over the years in posts to this group. We need to pick some of those that are suitable for a Seasonal Challenge and set up a schedule for them. They need to be easy to reproduce and to set up, run and score. Each should test a different aspect of archery skill such as; accuracy, speed,  unknown distance, moving targets, different shooting positions, etc. Thought should be given as to different divisions, e.g. handbow, crossbow, period, youth, etc. In addition some small prizes such as scrolls or tokens could be given to the "X" number of top scoring archers in each division.

No average three or whatever number scores, just each archer's top score for each division. It might be difficult to have three, etc chances to shoot it in three months. No winning kingdoms, just winning archers.  However, scores on the Score site would also be grouped by kingdom as well as overall SCA wide.  This way a kingdom could recognize their top scoring archers as well, if they wish (more chances for court time for archery and archers).

The Seasonal Competitions will test a variety of skills and archers should be encouraged, but not required, to shoot in as many divisions of each competition as they can, either with their own different bows e.g. modern recurve, period longbow, crossbow, etc., or with borrowed equipment if it is available .

The scores would also indicate those archers that excel in more than one weapons form. The competitions could be shot more than once per day, if time allows, allowing archers to shoot more than one official score per day and to shoot using more than one weapons form if they wish. However, an archer may not use the same handbow or crossbow to shoot for official score in more than one division. For example, no shooting the same period longbow in both open and period handbow divisions.

The SSC could be sponsored by the SCA Archery Guild, or whatever name it takes, as one of its activities.

If you have a competition that you would like to have used for the SCA Seasonal Challenge, please post it to the group.  Then anyone that has comments or suggestions for improving it may post their comments and the originator of the competition many make any changes that they feel would improve the competition.

When we have several finalized competitions, I will set up a poll in the poll section of the group and we can vote on a first and second competition that we would like to start with. Any competition for the winter months should be able to be shot indoors, with a twenty yard maximum range.  Competitions should not require too much time to shoot, so that they will fit into most event schedules and also be possible to shoot more than once in the same day if the marshal in charge wishes.

Each new competition would be announced two weeks in advance of starting.  Each competition will last for three months. They would be the; Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter Challenges. New competitions would continue to be submitted and voted upon.

Word of the competition would be forwarded to all the other archery lists and to the kingdom archery officers.  Those who have a competition should be encouraged to join this group and post it here. I will forward the current competition on to the SCA Target Archery Marshals list.

      Proposed Rules

There would be two categories: Open and Period. Each category would have two divisions: Handbow and crossbow.

The equipment rules for the Open and Period divisions would follow those of the IKAC for handbows and crossbows and for arrows and bolts.

Questions regarding the competition should be addressed to the origination of the competition, whose contact information will be included in the rules.

There would also be as a Youth competition as well. The ranges, targets, etc. would be adjusted accordingly. The definition of “Youth” will follow those of the Youth Division of the IKAC.

The rules for each of the Seasonal Competitions shall be determined by the originator of the competition.  The competition for each season shall be determined by vote of the members of SCA Archery on Google after discussion of the competitions on that site. (This may become – members of the SCA Archery Guild.) There should not be two similar competitions in a row.

The rules for the Crossbow Divisions may vary from the rules for the Handbow divisions. However, the rules for the Open and Period Handbow divisions will remain the same, as will the rules for the Open and Period Crossbow divisions.

Scores will be submitted to the SCA Scores Site for tabulation within two weeks of being shot. All information required by each competition must be included or the scores may be consider void.

All this needs to be discussed in the group and a formal version written up.  Your comments please.
