The Department of Justice has ordered the state of Florida to immediately halt efforts to purge state voter rolls. Florida had already started the process of removing 2,700 voters from its rolls, and was determined to remove thousands more.
This purge was, and is, illegal. Under the National Voter Registration Act, any removal of people from voter rolls must conclude 90 days before a federal election. Since the Florida primary is on August 14, 2012, Florida's window to cull its voter rolls closed on May 16. Additionally, the DOJ says that these changes required approval from the federal government under the Voting Rights Act because of Florida's history of racial discrimination in voting. Florida did not take that necessary step.
Florida has until June 6 to comply with the order from the Department of Justice. While the state hasn't formally responded yet, initial statements indicate it intends to fight the order.
It's time for Florida Republicans to start following the law. Join with Daily Kos and CREDO Action in calling on Florida Gov. Rick Scott to comply with the Department of Justice and stop purging state voter rolls.
