      Importance: High

      Dear colleagues,

Please find below, with additional details attached, a description for
the Philadelphia Zoo’s “Unless” Campaign. This is an initiative that
was recently launched by our Education and Conservation departments to
raise awareness about the loss of wild orangutan habitat as part of
our “Year of the Orangutan” by engaging students in a competition that
will result in a solution to help increase the market demand for
certified sustainable palm oil. I imagine that interested students are
probably those with both an interest in wild orangutan conservation
and technological skills. If you know of any students who you think
might wish to participate, please share this email with them. The
registration deadline is the end of February.

      Many thanks,
      Meredith

      Dear University Colleague:

We wanted to make you aware of an exciting new initiative at the
Philadelphia Zoo. We have recently launched the Philadelphia Zoo’s
University Unless Prize Challenge. This is a new groundbreaking
initiative, which invites university students from across the United
States to join efforts to save the critically- endangered orangutan
      while competing to win $10,000.
The Zoo is asking students to develop the most innovative mobile
device application to link consumers with palm oil manufacturers and
help increase market demand for certified sustainable palm oil. All
students nationwide who are enrolled in a university degree program
are eligible to compete. I have attached a one-page flyer that
describes the challenge in more detail.
Palm oil is the world’s most widely-produced vegetable oil and is
found in a wide array of consumer products from cookies to shampoo and
in almost 50% of packaged foods. Non-sustainable palm oil cultivation
is one of the leading causes of deforestation in Southeast Asia and
orangutans are losing their habitat as a result. If the nature of palm
oil production does not change, it is estimated that wild orangutans
will become extinct in the wild in as few as 25 years.
We would also love to discuss ways to spread the word about this great
opportunity for university students. If we could disseminate this
information directly to your students that would be wonderful. Also we
would be happy to do a presentation to interested students on campus.
Students that would like to compete in this unique prize challenge can
      register by logging onto: www.philadelphiazoo.org/universityunlessprize/details.html
      .
Please let us know if you have any questions and thanks in advance for
helping us with this wonderful new initiative!
      All the best,
      Kristen
