Students will be introduced to two ways of looking at the forms of
      engagement of practicing anthropologists:
      - forms of employment for practicing anthropologists; and
      - roles that anthropologists play in workplace practice

Students will be introduced to the different practices in which
anthropologists are involved: medical anthropology, work anthropology,
public policy anthropology, and consumer/design anthropology.

The employer-centered discussion will introduce students to the varying
skill sets, credentials and benefits and challenges of the different
forms of employment, and will be presented with bios of anthropologists
falling within each of these employment models:
      - medium to large consulting firms
      - small consulting firms
      - design firms
      - research firms
      - corporations
      - research and development organizations
      - government and educational agencies
      - NGO assessment organizations
      - universities
      - self-employment
      - partnerships/alliances

Students will be introduced to the concept of a personal marketing plan
and will be given the opportunity to begin work on their plans and to
receive feedback from other students and the workshop leader.

Finally, there will be a discussion of the differing roles
      anthropologists play in the workplace:
      - engagement manager
      - project team member
      - design team member
      - researcher
      - internal change agent
      - evaluator/assessment specialist
      - product developer

      What is "Practical Gatherings"?

Practical Gatherings, a membership organization, has been founded to
      support the growing profession of
anthropological workplace practice. Gatherings are intimate,
      issue-oriented discussions and workshops for
practicing anthropologists and social scientists, workplace
practitioners, students, faculty & executives. Each Gathering is limited
      to 22 people.

      Why "Practical Gatherings"?

"Practical Gatherings is exactly what Anthropology needs now. Our
      discipline is experiencing an explosion
of interest from places where we have been virtually absent until
recently. As faculty and students feel the
growing demand for anthropology that is coming from work organizations,
we need a means to prepare our
colleagues to face the complex theoretical, methodological, and ethical
      challenges of engagement in that
domain. Practical Gatherings is a comprehensive means to gather and
      transfer knowledge and experience
across the network of professional practitioners who are focusing on
studies of work. I can't think of a better way to meet our current
      needs."

Professor and Chair of Anthropology at Wayne State University
