First, Mel, I want to reply to your earlier message. The Omaha conference was exceptional in every respect. You and Leatha did a fine job! I concur entirely with Dianne's passionate assessment on our website. While I understand that some could not make it due to money matters or other exigencies, those who chose not to attend because they knew little or nothing about the Omaha/Lincoln area and/or the Winnebago Tribe or thought simply that Omaha was "not cool" passed up an extraordinary opportunity.

Now to the membership matter. I've said before that we seem to lack incentives to "join" (i.e., pay dues to) SACC as an added section to the basic AAA membership. Our website is first-class, provides all necessary information for SACC conferences and other matters and includes our biannual publication, all available to the public without charge.  Though the listserv requires joining through the administrator, it too is free to the public. We have been charging $275 conference registration for members and $300 for non-members (except students), but that difference equals the $25 we charge for SACC section membership. So aside from those of us "hard-core葉hrough thick and thin" members, why join?

And I don't have an answer for this. I don't know that we would increase membership if we restricted access to members only. My guess is that so many of the community college anthropologists and those from other institutions who place importance on teaching undergraduates are either adjunct or are facing enough problems of basic survival that membership matters are way down on their lists of professional priorities.

I'm confident that these matters will inspire lively and creative conversation in Montreal, and though I won't be there, I look forward to hearing about it all.
