Subject: Invitation to Roosevelt Lecture
The Anthropology Program and Waring Anthropology Endowment of the State
University of West Georgia are pleased to announce the Fall Semester 2000
Waring Lecture and invite you to attend in person or through cyberspace.
Dr. Anna C. Roosevelt (The Field Museum and University of Illinois) will
present a public lecture entitled "The First Americans: A New Picture of
the Initial Colonization of the New World" on Friday, September 22, 2000 at
7:00pm. Her lecture will be held at the Townsend Center for the Performing
Arts on the campus of the State University of West Georgia in Carrollton
(45 miles west of Atlanta). Those who can attend in person should call the
Townsend Center in advance (770.836.6694) to reserve free tickets. Cyber
attendance to this special lecture also will be available for academic
classes and other groups through real-time, streaming-video connections.
Advance arrangements for cyber connections must be made - for further
information and instructions please contact Mr. Tom Beggs at 770.836.6459.
For any list members who may not be familiar with Dr. Roosevelt's work, her
archaeological research in the Amazon has revealed the presence of
(well-dated) late Pleistocene sites. An early human presence in this area
has profound implications for current theories of the initial colonization
of the Americas. An article published in Science (Paleoindian Cave Dwellers
in the Amazon: The Peopling of the Americas - 19 April 1996, volume 272,
pp. 373-384) by Roosevelt and others provides additional information.
