      Position Opening
      Director of Research (IL)

The Center for American Archeology, a private not-for-profit research
and educational institution in the Lower Illinois Valley for over forty
years, seeks a professional archaeologist to serve as its Director of
Research.   The Director of Research will oversee the planning,
implementation and dissemination of all research at the Center.  The
Center is engaged in public and academic education, collections
research, cultural resource management, and independent research
projects.  Our research facilities include a repository with over eleven
million objects, research library, several specialty laboratories,
dormitories, classrooms and a publications office.

The Director of Research will work closely with other staff
archeologists, students and interns at the Center, and a variety of
other archeologists and professionals from the wider scientific
community.  Overall, the Director of Research works with the Executive
Director and CAA Chair of Research to shape the general direction of
research at the Center.  We seek an individual capable of building on
our prominent multidisciplinary research history by engaging the Center
in innovative research that will enhance our visibility in the
profession and in the public sector.  This individual will also network
with other archeologists in academic, museum, and cultural resource
management settings to promote research in our region through
cooperative projects and the use of our vast dataset. This position
requires grant writing and may include some teaching responsibilities.
There will be ample opportunity for the Director of Research to pursue
personal research interests in our region.

Qualifications for this position include a Ph.D. in Anthropology or
Archeology, experience in archeology of the Midwest or Eastern North
America that includes extensive fieldwork, and the demonstrated ability
to complete projects.  Experience in teaching and contract archeology is
also preferred.  The ability to work effectively with other
professionals and the public is vital to this position, as is a
commitment to archeological research and education.

Send a letter of application, vita, and contact information for three
references to the address below.  Questions regarding the position or
the application process can be directed to Cynthia Sutton, Executive
