        "The Whatness of Books"? ... very funny, though I can't disagree that tenure is a medieval in some contexts. The system promotes research, but then again, in recent decades it may have promoted too much "publish or perish" angst, leading to the puzzling paper topics and multitudinous conference proceedings. Then again, the system may protect academic freedom of speech, which is crucial. Perhaps a middle ground is needed.
