      In remembrance of Melvin Lawrence Ember (January 13, 1933 through September 27, 2009), Pearson is proud to announce the 1st annual Mel Ember Student Scholarship Award. With his coauthor, Carol R. Ember, Mel Ember was a Pearson/Prentice Hall author for almost 40 years. Their books, Anthropology and Cultural Anthropology, have taught more than 1.5 million students world-wide. This award is open to all students currently enrolled in an anthropology course! If your students are interested in participating in this scholarship, please have them write an essay or film a short video on the following topic:
      "Why do you think the study of Anthropology is
      important to today�s world?"
      Prizes:
      1st Place: $750 For Student Winner + $50 for Sponsoring Instructor
      2nd Place: $550 For Student Winner + $50 for Sponsoring Instructor
      3rd Place: $350 For Student Winner + $50 for Sponsoring Instructor
      Deadline: Submissions must be postmarked or emailed by 12/31/2010
      If submitting via email, send to: MelEmberStudentScholarship@...<mailto:MelEmberStudentScholarship@...>
      Winners: Will be announced on January 15, 2011
      Essay Topic: "Why do you think the study of Anthropology is important to today�s world?"
      Submission Guidelines: The essay must be no more than 1000 words in length. The video must be no more than 3 minutes. Both in response to the designated topic.
      Eligibility: The contest is open to all students enrolled in a college anthropology course at the time of submission.
      Judging Criteria: The winners will be determined Carol Ember, Director of HRAF and a supporting panel of Pearson Judges.
      Essays will be judged on the following criteria:
      How well the essay or video addresses the topic. Note: opinion or subjectivity will not factor into the decision�making process
      How clearly the thesis is presented
      How well the piece is organized
      How specific is the support for the thesis
      How relevant is the analysis of support
      For essays: writing correctness (spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc.)
