However, I want to make a comment about where to have the next meeting (Sacramento/Berekely).

I have been in SACC for about 14 years now (OMG!) and it has always been up to the President as to where the meetings will be held. I did ask for and got comments from folks, but ultimately it was entirely my decision. Some of you might be interested to know that there were people who were very unhappy with Savannah, GA as the selected site. (Too far, too hard to get to, too expensive, too small, too far south, too hot, nothing really to do, no university...)

My feeling is this, if you want to have a committee organize the meetings, then organize a committee. Otherwise, take the chance of seeing someplace you perhaps wouldn't see otherwise and trust the person who has volunteered for election to organize the meetings.

I'll have a roll of pennies to give each of you my $.02 wherever we meet.

      Cheers!

      Dianne Chidester

It seems to work that way. I have no idea why it's not working this way!

I agree also, now that I have thought about Diane's comments...Akron turned out to be our second highest draw, so we should at least respect the leader' s choice and hear the plan...it does need to be a place within easy transport from afar...and have some kind of draw which I am sure will be in The Plan.

I don't know what's going on, but it's always been the role of the president-elect to select the meeting site. One of the wonderful things about SACC is that we are small enough to go to smaller venues and see really neat things. I'll always remember our meetings in Akron, Savanna, San Antonio, Monterey, and Tucson, hardly major airport hubs.

Sacramento is actually quite easy to get to and in talking with George in Tucson there are a lot of great trips available. So let George do it!

                The linked worked!

                  Hi all:

Tucson is absolutely not a major hub, and frankly, I'm not sure the Tucson meeting really worked entirely, but that's a different issue (rain was definitely not our friend, and now it is back up in the 90's and it seems for good for the year -- aaargh). Maren & I stepped up when there as a gap in the schedule at the last minute; Tucson was batted around the table and it stuck. It was discussed all of about 15 minutes, with Phoenix as a very remote 2nd possibility.

I'm all for going with whatever George has in mind -- Sacramento sounds like an interesting possibility! It isn't such a small place, or even that hard to get to, and is a stone's throw from other bigger places in Calif. (I'm a native San Josean, but spent lots of time in the Central Valley, strangely enough).

Berkeley would be great too -- I personally will come to either place.

I'm going to echo the stream of e-mails from Dianne and others -- a committee decision would be a different sort of process, and I'm not sure we have the organization to do it -- I have every confidence that whatever George chooses will be really good.

(By the way to Dianne -- it was Savannah that actually got me involved in SACC. I had been a member for awhile, very much enjoyed SACC Notes, and had wanted to come to really great sounding places before that, but Savannah actually got me on a plane! And it was well worth it.)

Well, echoing Phil, I sure as heck don't know what's going on either, but I definitely arrive at SACC meetings through ulterior motives.  So far Oaxaca and Tucson have been the only times I've shown up.  Lloyd accused me of having a life.  In 2000 I saw mention of Oaxaca in an anthropological publication (probably AN) and learned of SACC that way.  Berkeley or Sacramento would mean similar effort for us from Tejas, but up to this point my ulterior motive for 2010 was that wife Fran could join us and we could visit relatives in Sacramento at the same time.  Next time I'll stay for more than two and a half days. (That's another story).
                    Major-hub-ness is NOT an attraction....
For those similarly afflicted people I was talking with in Tucson about whether there are attractions in or near or associated with Sacramento, Napa is a similar drive from either there or Berkeley.  Excuse me for milking the same laugh-line.  I'm probably wrong (see first sentence above), but hotel prices in Berkeley may be farther off the charts for those of us whose "institutions" don't pay travel.
                    Picky, picky, picky.....

I'm going to echo the stream of e-mails from Dianne and others -- a
committee decision would be a different sort of process, and I'm not
sure we have the organization to do it -- I have every confidence that
whatever George chooses will be really good.

(By the way to Dianne -- it was Savannah that actually got me involved
in SACC. I had been a member for awhile, very much enjoyed SACC Notes,
and had wanted to come to really great sounding places before that, but
Savannah actually got me on a plane! And it was well worth it.)

I don't know what's going on, but it's always been the role of the
president-elect to select the meeting site. One of the wonderful things
about SACC is that we are small enough to go to smaller venues and see
really neat things. I'll always remember our meetings in Akron, Savanna,
                      San
Antonio, Monterey, and Tucson, hardly major airport hubs.

Sacramento is actually quite easy to get to and in talking with George
                      in

                      The linked worked!

However, I want to make a comment about where to have the next meeting
                      (Sacramento/Berekely).

I have been in SACC for about 14 years now (OMG!) and it has always been
                      up
                      to
the President as to where the meetings will be held. I did ask for and
                      got
comments from folks, but ultimately it was entirely my decision. Some of
                      you
might be interested to know that there were people who were very unhappy
                      with
Savannah, GA as the selected site. (Too far, too hard to get to, too
                      expensive,
too small, too far south, too hot, nothing really to do, no
                      university...)

My feeling is this, if you want to have a committee organize the
                      meetings,
                      then
organize a committee. Otherwise, take the chance of seeing someplace you
perhaps wouldn't see otherwise and trust the person who has volunteered
                      for
                      election to organize the meetings.

I'll have a roll of pennies to give each of you my $.02 wherever we
                      meet.

                      Cheers!

                        Hi all:

Tucson is absolutely not a major hub, and frankly, I'm not sure the
Tucson meeting really worked entirely, but that's a different issue
(rain was definitely not our friend, and now it is back up in the 90's
and it seems for good for the year -- aaargh). Maren & I stepped up when
there as a gap in the schedule at the last minute; Tucson was batted
around the table and it stuck. It was discussed all of about 15 minutes,
with Phoenix as a very remote 2nd possibility.

I'm all for going with whatever George has in mind -- Sacramento sounds
like an interesting possibility! It isn't such a small place, or even
that hard to get to, and is a stone's throw from other bigger places in
Calif. (I'm a native San Josean, but spent lots of time in the Central
                        Valley, strangely enough).

Berkeley would be great too -- I personally will come to either place.

I'm going to echo the stream of e-mails from Dianne and others -- a

I'm going to echo the stream of e-mails from Dianne and others -- a
committee decision would be a different sort of process, and I'm not
sure we have the organization to do it -- I have every confidence that
whatever George chooses will be really good.

Sacramento is actually quite easy to get to and in talking with George
                          in
Tucson there are a lot of great trips available. So let George do it!

                          The linked worked!

However, I want to make a comment about where to have the next meeting
                          (Sacramento/ Berekely) .

I have been in SACC for about 14 years now (OMG!) and it has always been
                          up
                          to
the President as to where the meetings will be held. I did ask for and
                          got
comments from folks, but ultimately it was entirely my decision. Some of
                          you
might be interested to know that there were people who were very unhappy
                          with
Savannah, GA as the selected site. (Too far, too hard to get to, too
                          expensive,
too small, too far south, too hot, nothing really to do, no
                          university.. .)

My feeling is this, if you want to have a committee organize the
                          meetings,
                          then
organize a committee. Otherwise, take the chance of seeing someplace you
perhaps wouldn't see otherwise and trust the person who has volunteered
                          for
                          election to organize the meetings.

I am new to the group so I have nothing to compare it to but I had a
great time in Tucson. I thought the weather was invigorating and the
conversation and companionship special and fulfilling. Just my 2
cents--maybe we can reach a whole dollar.

I'm going to echo the stream of e-mails from Dianne and others -- a
committee decision would be a different sort of process, and I'm not
sure we have the organization to do it -- I have every confidence that
whatever George chooses will be really good.

Sacramento is actually quite easy to get to and in talking with George
                            in
Tucson there are a lot of great trips available. So let George do it!

                            The linked worked!

However, I want to make a comment about where to have the next meeting
                            (Sacramento/ Berekely) .

I have been in SACC for about 14 years now (OMG!) and it has always been
                            up
                            to
the President as to where the meetings will be held. I did ask for and
                            got
comments from folks, but ultimately it was entirely my decision. Some of
                            you
might be interested to know that there were people who were very unhappy
                            with
Savannah, GA as the selected site. (Too far, too hard to get to, too
                            expensive,
too small, too far south, too hot, nothing really to do, no
                            university.. .)

My feeling is this, if you want to have a committee organize the
                            meetings,
                            then
organize a committee. Otherwise, take the chance of seeing someplace you
perhaps wouldn't see otherwise and trust the person who has volunteered
                            for
                            election to organize the meetings.

I'll have a roll of pennies to give each of you my $.02 wherever we
                            meet.

                            Cheers!

Hey everybody out in SACC -Land. This is a test to see if I'm really
out in cyberspace or just spaced out. I ttied to sign on to the list
serve and it comes back and says that permission to join has not been
approved yet or some BS like that. Talking about BS. Mel, Autumn and I
got an earful about Sacramento being the possible site for our next
meeting when we were in the bar going over financials. (you know who you
are)! Well this sort of started a groundswell of either opposition to or
a concern over this location. "There's no direct flights, It costs to
much to fly there, What's there besides the "Governator",stuff like
this. Well needless to say, this kind of behavior gave me pause and kind
of surprized me. I said to myself, Geo, what the hells goin on heah
(boston accent for here), so I said...screw it....I'll just quit and
let the complainers put the meeting together themselves...I sure as hell
don't need this defication. ....Then I realized after to talking to and
receiving emails from past presidents and folks who have put these
meetings on in the past that some of our SACC friends on only love wine
but they love to WHINE as well. So with some help from my friends like
Rob, Autumn our new incoming treas. past pres. and my cornerstone Jo,
I can promise you all a great time in a location that will fit our
dwindling budgets, foster local participation and be a great learning
experience. Now I hope this damn thing gets out to all of you........I
love being in SACC and you guys are a bunch of great people. That
includes the international contingent as well.....Muck the Bruins are up
                                by 3 games......geo

George: Thank you and Jo for sticking with this! It will be a great meeting.

I would love to be any help I can possibly be, as well as a one-person cheering section (I know there will be others though - including my co-pres/co-dependent Maren Wilson).

Love the Boston accent... even in cyber-space.

                                  Mary Kay Gilliland

(Maren and I are going to put together a consolidated list of words of wisdom from various past-presidents & organizers and add our 2 cents - maybe that adds up to 4 cents between us - )
